The constant threat of being homeless, the possibility of becoming a high-schooldropout, the diagnosis of her mother with a mental illness, the death of her father, and fighting spells of illness could not dampen the spirit of now 21-year-old Ariana Duggan, second-year accounting major at the UWI, Mona, and a JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation scholar for 2017-18. This effervescent and mild-mannered young lady describes the mountain of challenges that she has faced in the last few years as "character-building", stating, "Challenges either make you into dust or refine you like a diamond; I chose to be refined."

Fourth Netball Jamaica /UTech Coaching Course Underway

Twenty local coaches started the fourth Netball Jamaica (NJ)/University of Technology (UTech) Level 1 coaching course at the weekend.  Marva Bernard, president of Netball Jamaica, said her organisation was pleased to be staging another course. She said that the impact on the sport has been tremendous to date, and mentioned that the new head coach of the Under-21 squad, Christopher Smart, is a graduate of the course.

UHWI gets $1.6m for diathermy machine...

WITH more than 90 major surgeries done weekly at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), there is significant need for diathermy machines, which are critical in surgical procedures as they are used in the dissection of body tissues in most surgical operations and help to reduce excessive bleeding.

The Joan Duncan Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the JMMB Group, responded to this need by donating $1.65 million to the UHWI to purchase a mobile state-of-the-art diathermy machine.
