The Vincent HoSang UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC), hosted by Mona School of Business & Management (MSBM), is designed as a platform for growth for student entrepreneurs in the Caribbean, by equipping them with the resources they need to move their ideas from concept into full-fledged businesses.

“A Braille machine is like a pen or pencil to a sighted-child,” shared Iyeke Erharuyi, principal of the Salvation Army School for the Blind. JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation came onboard with other corporate sponsors, on the Digicel Foundation-led, ‘Follow the Trail, Invest in Braille’ campaign in donating J$765,000 towards the cause, to provide five additionally braille machines to facilitate the teaching and learning process.

In the true spirit of giving during the yuletide season, the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation joined hands and hearts with its team members and charities islandwide to share love and bring cheer, to over 3000 vulnerable individuals this year, including the elderly, disabled and others in need.

Studies have shown that low food security among tertiary students is an often overlooked issue, although it can affect more than 25 per cent of the tertiary population. It is against this background that the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation has made a $1-million donation towards the GraceKennedy (GK) Campus Connect Food Bank, which is executed through the GraceKennedy Foundation (GKF).

Kim Mair, CEO of the Foundation, shared, “We decided to partner with several organisations in the execution of their various Summer programmes in a bid to cater to the psychosocial needs of our young people, helping them to tap into their greatness and uncover their academic prowess and/or creative talents.”

THE JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation has invested approximately $400,000 to the Franklyn Town Community Development Project (FTDCP). This initiative is designed to empower at-risk young men to make positive and healthy lifestyle choices, and develop life skills by creating socio-economic opportunities, reducing violence and crime, and promoting a sense of community.

Kim Mair, CEO of JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation said, “When circumstances do not permit biological parents to care for their children, foster care is a good option. It however takes work and the involvement of everyone - the private sector, the government, and other stakeholders - to make caring for these children work, that’s why we’re supporting this programme.”

The Joan Duncan Trust and Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) gave J$7.5 million in support of research undertaken by the University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica researchers for the production and publication of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2021 Jamaica Report.

The JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation remains an ongoing sponsor of the competition in keeping with its mandate to support and nurture young talent through entrepreneurship and education.

The JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation, in recognition of its 30th anniversary, will award 30 scholarships to students at the secondary and tertiary level for the upcoming academic year. The foundation’s scholarship application period runs until May 31.

The JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation has embarked on the donation of approximately 400 tablets to 32 primary schools islandwide, to assist vulnerable students to fully participate in online learning. The donation follows on the $10 million given to support the ‘One Laptop or Tablet Per Child’ initiative, in response to the call made by the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ), for corporate companies and individuals, in Jamaica and in the diaspora to lend a hand, to this initiative.

Daniel Wint, a grade six student at Salt Savannah Primary School in Clarendon, is one of the 400 beneficiaries of tablets and SIM cards, to facilitate Internet access for remote learning, from the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation.

The quote “touch one, touch a thousand” aptly describes the philosophy behind JMMB’s Share the Love initiative that last year saw the company, along with its philanthropic arm JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation, joining forces with three charities to touch the lives of over 1,000 vulnerable individuals.

Through the partnership with Kiwanis Club of Liguanea, #ChristmasInRiverton toy drive and Future Hope charity senior citizens from the Liguanea communities; children in Riverton City and neighbouring communities as well as homeless individuals in the corporate area received some much needed Christmas cheer, in the form of care packages, toys, meals and hygiene packages.

The Joan Duncan Foundation committed $10 million to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information’s ‘One Laptop or Tablet Per Child’ initiative at the Haughton Terrace, New Kingston offices of Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) on Tuesday.
